2000 News: 2000-2001 SABEW Directors Announced

SABEW Members Approve new Bylaws, New leadership

COLUMBIA, MO,. --The Society of American Business Editors and Writers has approved new bylaws designed to make the group more responsive to its membership and has elected new leadership, including five new members to its board of governors.

At SABEW’s recent annual convention in Atlanta, the group’s membership approved a series of constitutional changes that moves the group toward more open elections of the governing body for the largest trade group for financial journalists.

SABEW members also elected Byron "Barney" Calame, a deputy managing editor of The Wall Street Journal, as its president. Calame was elected to a one-year term as SABEW's leader. The five new governors, chosen in an election that saw 11 candidates vie for the open seats are: Becky Bisbee of the Austin Statesman-American; Sandy Gonzalez of Bloomberg News; James Mallory of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution; Floyd Norris of the New York Times and Brahm Resnik of the Arizona Republic.

Also at the Atlanta meeting, Bill Barnhart of the Chicago Tribune was chosen as SABEW vice president; Charles Jaffe, a mutual funds columnist at The Boston Globe, was elected treasurer and Kathy Kristof, a personal finance columnist at the Los Angeles Times, is the new secretary.

Reelected board members were: Frank Brill of The Journal News (Westchester, N.Y.); Peter Hillan of San Jose Mercury News; Jonathan Lansner of The Orange County (Calif.) Register; Sougata Mukherjee of American City Business Journals; Richard Papiernik of Nation's Restaurant News; Randy Picht of The Associated Press; Richard Satran of Reuters; Craig Schwed of Gannett News Service; Rex Seline of Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram; Marcia Stepanek of Business Week magazine; and Alecia Swasy of the St. Petersburg Times.

SABEW also announced at the Atlanta meeting that it would be endowing a chair in business and economics journalism at the University of Missouri.

SABEW, headquartered at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, is an association of more than 3,000 business journalists in North America. Formed in 1964 to promote superior coverage of business and economic events and issues, it is the only business journalism association for editors and writers.

SABEW has three specialty reporting conferences scheduled for later this year. The first SABEW small business conference will be held in Kansas City, MO., on June 22-24; SABEW's fourth annual technology reporting workshop will be held in Irvine, Calif., on Sept. 16-17; and SABEW's sixth annual personal finance reporting workshop will be held in Tampa, Fla., on Oct. 22-24.
