Making ZIP Files (Compressed Files)Printable version of this page

to be attached by News and Student contest entrants to the Online Registration Form

Create a folder specifically for a single BIB entry and save under it all the electronic files that you want to submit with that entry. The BIB contest entry form accepts one file attachment per entry, so you must combine the files in a single ZIP file. If you have installed and currently use any archive program, just create a ZIP file out of the files and attach it to the online entry form.

If you do not have experience, depending on the type of computer operation system you have, proceed according to the platforms:

  • Windows XP: Select the files (with the mouse, Control-click or Shift-click contiguous files), then right-click with the mouse to open a pop-up menu. Scroll down to Sent to, then select Compressed (zipped) folder. The zip folder is created in the same directory and is named after the first file from the list of zipped files.

The earlier versions of Windows do not have archive management integrated into the operating system, so you must obtain and install that yourself. We recommend that you go to http://www.7-zip.org/ to download the free program 7-Zip; their web site offers explanation of how to handle the installation on your computer. After you have installed 7-Zip on your computer, go to the folder where you saved the electronic version of your BIB entry. Select the files (with the mouse, Control-click or Shift-click contiguous files), then right-click with the mouse to open a pop-up menu. Scroll down to 7-Zip, then select Add to archive... This will open a window in which the first field is the name of the archive. The second field is Archive Format – make sure you select “ZIP” from the pull-down menu and press ”OK” to create the zip archive. The zip folder is created in the same directory.

  • Mac OS X: Select the files (Command-click or Shift-click contiguous files), then choose Create Archive of X Items from the Action menu. A file will be created named “Archive.zip” You might want to rename the file to suggest your name and/or organization.
